I was asked to make some high impact portraits of student athletes to help cornerstone an upcoming Gettysburg College Orange & Blue club fundraising campaign, which will help fund the school's athletic teams & the very athletes I was to portray. The focus of the project was to communicate intense game-focus determination through intimate portraits, without an overbearing suggestion to a specific sport.

So I choose to approach it with a simple black background to highlight the subjects; and with the use of striking lighting, I attempted make a bold impression that would translate well into print publications for National distribution to their alumni.

It was an exciting opportunity to research & orchestrate a new creative production, travel with my mobile studio, & make images of athletes who I normally only catch on the field or court.

01/14/12 - Erie, PA: I had a request from a good friend & colleague to make some maternity images of her, while in Erie covering some sports for her school. Now I usually stray from this type of work, but the stars were in allignment & we went for it. We did a lot of conventional shots & used some researched stock for ideas. This image began as a typical "pregnant woman peaking around the corner of a wall" shot. We did that, than I noticed that cool homemade wall art & the clean walls. So I did a 180° and put a umbrellad strobe behind her & camera left. I got the belly highlight I was going for, and I was pleasantly surprised with the light's reflection off the foreground wall. I've never made an image quite like this, & it may be one of my favorite personal portraits. And I really dig the wall art.

It's always a shot in the dark with a remote such as this, but luckily I got some good action and landed a few nearly identical frames from different angles.

I was in D.C. today and I'll be honest, it wasn't for any altruistic reason. I had a piece of gear that was broken & my favorite camera repair shop is in town … so with the combination of a government (thus traffic) holiday & free parking, it was a match made in heaven. With some midday time waiting for my repair, and I decided to jog the mall. It was a beautiful crisp day, and I was heartened to see many other people and their families enjoying it. I went out simply for some exercise & to wander through many monuments that I haven't seen for a while or even at all. Soon I found myself at the foot of The Lincoln Memorial. I didn't preconceive this adventure in this way. To be walking grounds where thousands of citizens have stood to rally for their rights. Who listened to Martin Luther King Jr's famous words echo through the District's Mall valley.
I felt so fortunate to be in here, on our Nation's annual holiday to honor his work for the Civil Rights of minorities & the poor. It was a refreshing day well spent. I even got to meet some new people … pictured in the first image: Lynda Jone-Burns of Washington D.C., walks through the World War II Memorial with her family, & with an original copy of The Washington Post from Friday April 5, 1968.

1/14/12 - Erie, PA: MaryEllen Spooner, competing in the breast stroke Saturday afternoon for her Behrend College Lions, attempted to swoon a child to the water in turn 3 of her 100 meter breast stroke. Luckily, the young child's Father stood close at hand & it was his reactions that saved the baby from the grasps of the undergrad & what would certainly have been a soggy demise.

It has been a good year with some new challenges, & lots of road time. This is my third year for this "best-of" ritual, and though the theme is run into the ground around this time, I find it a good practice to help evolve & grow. It helps me see where my strengths play out & where I'd like to improve. It continually helps to focus me toward a year long goal of capturing quality peak-action & emotion. 11/20/11 - Lancaster, PA: Another one of my toughest sports to cover, primarily because I'm always behind glass and shooting backs (@ F&M). Maybe it frustrates me because I'm boxed out. I'm still waiting for permission to shoot physically on court. Come on, John White let me! What's the big deal? This lead shot I've been trying for a few years. It's one of those where I'm just spent on shooting backhands in the corner … and then the mind starts to wander. I try for symmetry, good emotion, and ideally two balls. This one may be my favorites yet. The remote work is a little more fun, maybe because of my slightly medieval homemade remote box ... these were a few of my favorites.

11/12/11 - Lancaster, PA: With the conclusion of this season with a classic matchup, which first began in 1890, my football coverage for the year comes to an end. The game itself continues to be one of my most challenging, thankfully each year I pick up a little insight for my approach. There's so much happening on-field, with 22 players often engaging in their own micro battle and/or deception (which often deceives me), that the game regularly stretches my level of engagement.
But Saturday's game was fast. It was the fourth quarter before I even knew it. The two teams were quick to get off plays & that helped keep my mind out of the game. Leaving me with a few focal points & my reactions. Still as always, I left the field missing a few things, but walked away happy with a few different shots & modest general coverage. With the 28-14 F&M victory over Gettysburg, the series is now 45-45-7.

Winter? Yikes.

You know where midnight fog rolls in following a lightning delay, and you can't feel your limbs anymore. And there are these deep weird red, & orange, & green colors cycling through my frame. 10/21/11 - Gettysburg, PA: The chaos that occurs at the goal in field hockey is so rapid with minute motions, it's often tough to make a clear capture. There's the feeder, who often distracts me too much to follow the ball into the inside girl, who's looking for a deflection, a slap, or a redirecting flip. There's so much rapid activity & obstruction that I usually don't have a real clear view. This worked out well - and just as the sun popped out.

10/15/2011 - Westminster, MD: Franklin & Marshall's C.T. Marsh (#6) sacks McDaniel Quarterback Nick Valori (#5) with 1:58 remaining in the game. Recovering the ball in the scuffle, Marsh ran it back for a 24 yard touch down. Struggling to recover from a 24-0 halftime deficit, the Terror attempted to regain momentum scoring in both the 3rd & 4th quarters, then they recovered a fumble preceding this play. However, this final & brief possession for McDaniel added insult to injury and sealed a 31-14 victory for the Diplomats at Scott S. Bair Stadium Saturday afternoon.

8/9/11 - Springfield, MO: I photographed my first urban farm last week. It's something I really find fascinating and inspiring. Urban farms are a complete reversal of conventional perceptions of what a city should be … and I like that. They help redefine a cityscape, and often reclaim land that has long been overlooked as a dump site or unsafe open space.

Melissa & Adam Millsap are owners of Urban Roots Farm. They're civic pioneers with a bold vision to help their city, feed and educate its citizens, and maintain a healthy lifestyle for themselves and their family. They lobbied city legislators to establish urban agriculture, and funded their business with social lending which has helped energize their West Central neighborhood. They use spent grain as compost from a local micro-brewery, and have developed a non-profit called The Springfield Urban Agriculture Collation which is helping to feed school students in their USDA declared food desert. They are making exponentially positive changes in the Ozarks.

My Father in law is an old share cropper from Missouri, so he felt right at home as we were walking around my garden looking for a little extra something for dinner … when he dove straight into my potato patch and pulled out a new potato. "We call it Noodling for potatoes" … and that just made me smile.

It doesn't get much better … on a slow summer day … to forage for fresh fruit in the city. Mulberry trees are near the end of their production this time of year. You know these trees … when you walk under them the ground is stained purple with its berries. Well, we went on a three person mission ; ) on foot, for these sweet treats. And we hit the jackpot … and then stumbled upon some black raspberries … and then I found a cherry tree! I'm afraid I'm unable to reveal the location of this Oasis … but needless to say all parties involved were satisfied.

5/1 - Lancaster, PA: This classic rivalry extended into this weekend's Centennial Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship game where Franklin & Marshall met Gettysburg College for the ninth time in as many years. It was an exciting game on both ends of the field, even as F&M pulled away 7-4 with 11:55 remaining. I was sure we were in for overtime as Gettysburg had the momentum after two quick goals at 3:28, bringing the score to 7-6. But F&M kept possession and killed the clock, that's where the score ended.

With the victory, F&M gained an automatic bid to the NCAA National Tournament, their 14th trip. Gettysburg will also likely win a bid.

With no outs and an F&M runner on second, it looked like Coach Taylor was going to try to break the tie with some small ball. But when the bunts couldn't find their way fare in the bottom of the ninth ... third basemen Kevin Shields hit a two-out single scoring pinch runner Tyler Veterano for the game-winning run as F&M defeated Ursinus 7-6.

3/19 - Erie, PA: Penn State Behrend junior defender Anne Lawrence (14) goes all-out to force a turnover atop Carthage freshman Amanda Kuchan (19). But the Lady Reds went on to sink the Penn State Lion's 14-1 in Allegheny Mountain Conference competition at the Junker Center Pool.

I made a lot of shots Saturday, but in this series, I really liked Lawrence's facial expression & the splash formations that resulted in the struggle.

3/15>16/11 - PA: Both my teams came out on top, a pleasant occurrence that translates into energy & into my frame. F&M powered through Susquehanna 16-7, & Gettysburg earned a back and forth double overtime win over Cabrini 8-7. Great days too ... slightly overcast and mild. I tried to spread the focus across the field except when needed, tried to avoid flying plastic, and I traveled with my 20mm prime wide open with relative success (tweaked).

Basketball 2/9 | Gettysburg vs. F&M

Two of my favorite teams went head to head in a Wednesday night doubleheader in Gettysburg. The Gettysburg Women fought through a game, where in the second half F&M battled back within four, but were held at bay and the Bullets eventually prevailed 66-55 over the Diplomats. The Gettysburg Men, hampered by a diminished roster, fell behind early to F&M. The Bullets weren't without highlights when Senior forward Andrew Powers surpassed a 1,880 career point record set by Ron Warner ’62 late in the second half, ending with 1,882 on the day. The main attraction was Diplomat head coach Glenn Robinson, who in his 1,100th career game, won his 800th over Gettysburg 68-46 - becoming only the 13th coach in NCAA history to do so.

Breast cancer awareness month was honored Friday night with with an array of colorful support as The Franklin High Girls Basketball team took on Milford Mill. Unfortunately, their regalia didn't help propel the girls to victory as they lost the varsity match-up 51-29 at home.

This was my first meet in Gettysburg's sparkling new pool & a warm up for the conference championship weekend 2/18. It was nice and bright - ISO 6400 with around 1/800th - 1/1250th of a second shutter at f/2.8. With the generally high shutter speeds I was able to capture some pretty cool water formations as the athletes swam. Here's some of their water art ...

It was another challenging day of Squash. For both F&M and myself. Squash is one of the toughest sports for me to cover. Set remote, clean glass, find a white balance, stretch, don't whack anyone in the crowd with the camera. The box where it's played is the smallest arena for competition & there's no day dreaming with the speed of play. I so often sit at the corners and capture the backhand, so I posted a few of those - with a few others that I really like ...

Mt. St. Mary's dropped Sacred Heart 61-45 Thursday night in Emmitsburg. At half time they honored Coach Jim Phelan, who coached at the Mount for 49 years ending in 2003. Phelan is the 7th highest all time DI coach with 830 wins and was just inducted into the inaugural class of the NEC Hall of Fame. Following the game I made a photo with Phelan the present Mount men's team.

Sports

These Sports images contain game-action shots, including a few from new attempts such as Crew and Water Polo, as well as the ever challenging (for me) Squash.

Editorial

This second group's focus is away from peak action. I've used the Editorial classification loosely, assembling images taken on & off field as well as some Commercial and Personal projects that I really like. Also this year, I began experimenting with Lightroom and there are a few enhanced examples here too.

It was an overall good year of challenging work that sent me all over the mid-atlantic and brought some new leads and adventures.

OK, it may be a bit early to call it the best of 2011. But I was stoked to find my favorites #4 & #5 fell into frame and focus. There was so much loose ball action Wednesday night at the Junker Center I almost thought I was shooting soccer. Here Behrend's Abby Henderson (10) & D'Youville's Ellen Remillard (1) battle it out at midcourt. The Lion's defensive pressure stunted the Spartans offensive and led to their 72 to 37 win.

Maybe ... though it isn't exactly what I was going for. I can tell over the last couple weeks my journey indoors is going to be slow; as I transition from 9 frames per second to One (generally) with strobes, and I readjust my timing ... fun stuff ahead.

Gettysburg Football 10/30

I'm confident in stating that for most in attendance, Saturday's meeting between Gettysburg College and Susquehanna University was one of the most amazing football games to bear witness to. The game was dominated by offensive fireworks; with a combined 111 points and 1,162 total yards; and a first quarter brawl! Gettysburg mounted a 34 point comeback in the final 18 minutes of the game to win 61-50 in their first match since 1922. Yea, there were few opportunities to capture some peak action.

Friday Night's Homecoming

I discovered that I missed that classic Friday night High School Football game a little bit. I so often took them for granted in the past. Having the chance again last Friday, I was able to appreciate a game in a small town on Maryland's eastern-shore. The energy on the sidelines & in the stands, the optimistic vigor of the kids & parents, and the late golden glow as dark took over a cool early-fall afternoon. It's a nice taste of our Americana.

This image struck me as I combed through my Gettysburg Football coverage from this weekend. I was trying to cover the defense. I had noticed the intensity in this guy's face earlier in the game, and as I was following him through a play this wonderful symmetry happened. It was one of those things that you really can't plan, and luckily just falls together. This is my kind of pic; I really like its balance, his expression, and the action unfolding in the foreground.

I was invited to go crabbing Saturday. It was my first experience pulling crabs and I had a blast. I have a new found appreciation for the high level of labor involved in getting a bushel of crabs to my table. We spent a full day in the shallow waters of the Middle River and the Chesapeake near Miller's Island. We worked our tails off for a bushel of heavy crabs that we enjoyed well into the evening.
